My daughter called in tears, claiming she urgently needed heart surgery.

My daughter called in tears, claiming she urgently needed heart surgery. I drove four hours to reach her, only to find her face hidden beneath bandages. But her doctor’s reaction made me question her entire story.

“Mom, there’s something wrong with my heart. The doctors say I need surgery immediately. Please, I’m scared.”

My daughter Emily, twenty-one, was crying so uncontrollably I could hardly understand her.

She attended college four hours away and had felt unwell for weeks. Now she was calling from a private clinic near campus, claiming she needed a $24,000 operation.

I grabbed my keys and headed there immediately.

But when I stepped into her recovery room, I froze.

Emily lay in bed, thick dressings concealing most of her face.

“Oh my God, honey! What happened to your face?”

“Mom, please. I’m in so much pain,” she whispered. “The doctors said my skin reacted badly to something during surgery. That’s why they had to bandage it.”

“Are you sure you’re okay? What about your heart?”

“The operation went fine, Mom. Please, I just want to sleep.”

She shut her eyes before adding, “Can you go downstairs and pay for the balance? They said everything needs to be settled today.”

I had more questions but didn’t want to distress her.

Before paying, I went downstairs and requested a meeting with her surgeon.

He smiled upon learning I was Emily’s mother.

“Oh, you’re Emily’s mother! I’m glad you’re here. And I must say, it was very brave of your family to agree to this.”

Confused, I frowned.

“Agree to what, Doctor?”

His expression changed.

“I thought Emily had discussed the procedure with you.”

“She did. She told me she needed emergency heart surgery.”

He paused.

“I think you should speak with your daughter before we discuss anything further.”

“Doctor, is something wrong with her heart?”

“I can’t discuss her medical details without her permission.”

I rushed upstairs.

Emily stirred as I returned.

“I just spoke with your doctor. What procedure was he talking about?”

“Mom, I’m tired.”

“Emily, did you have heart surgery?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“No.”

“Then what surgery did you have?”

She drew the blanket beneath her chin.

“Don’t freak out.”

I was already panicking, but I waited for her explanation.

Her confession left me speechless.

“I had my face changed.”

My daughter had pretended she was dying to obtain $24,000 for cosmetic surgery.

“What?” I whispered.

“I couldn’t stand looking at myself anymore.”

I wanted to comfort her, yet anger overwhelmed me.

“You told me you might die. I drove four hours thinking I could lose you.”

“I’m sorry.”

“And the money?”

“I need help paying for everything.”

Emily consented to having her surgeon explain.

He confirmed she’d undergone scheduled procedures involving her nose and chin. She’d never had a heart condition.

“Emily told me her family knew how much she was struggling with her appearance,” he explained. “She said you’d discussed the decision and supported her through the risks. That’s what I meant when I called your family’s decision brave.”

Emily avoided my gaze.

After he departed, I questioned her about the deposit.

“My savings.”

“Your college savings?”

She nodded. She’d spent nearly all her living-expense savings on the deposit and financed the remainder.

The total approached $24,000.

“So you blew your college savings, and want me to foot the bill for the rest?”

She nodded again.

I’d spent years helping Emily afford college, and now she’d endangered her education to alter her appearance.

“Why didn’t you ask me first?”

“Because you would’ve said no.”

“I would’ve asked why.”

“That’s the same thing.”

“No, Emily. It isn’t.”

She faced the wall.

Eventually, I asked, “Something happened at school, right?”

Her shoulders trembled.

Months earlier, someone had photographed her laughing at a gathering. The image spread among students, who mocked her nose and chin.

Someone altered the photograph to exaggerate her features. Others laughed as she walked past or mimicked her smile.

Emily withdrew from gatherings and avoided cameras.

I recalled her frequent refusal of video calls, usually blaming her messy room.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because you’d say they’re stupid and I shouldn’t listen.”

She was probably right. That was exactly how I might have responded.

“It wasn’t that simple, Mom. I had to see them every day.”

I took her hand.

“Who helped you through it?”

“Ryan.”

Ryan had been her boyfriend for nearly a year. We’d met twice, and he’d seemed courteous.

“He was the only person who understood,” Emily continued. “He helped me find the surgeon.”

“Ryan helped you choose the surgery?”

“He supported my decision.”

“Did he ever tell you that you didn’t need it?”

She paused.

“He wanted me to be happy.”

Her answer troubled me, but she was exhausted, so I stopped questioning her.

The next morning, her doctor discharged her with recovery instructions.

I reserved a nearby hotel room to care for her.
