I Asked if My Daughter’s Husband and His Family Were Coming for Christmas, and When She Said “Just 15 People,” I Smiled and Told Her I’d Be on Vacation—Because I Was Done Being Their Babysitter and Employee… – Living With Meaning

Then Megan wrote:

Just let me tell her last minute. She won’t say no if Oliver’s excited.

I dried my hands on a towel and smiled.

“I won’t be here,” I said.

Megan blinked.

“What?”

“I’ll be on vacation.”

Her phone slowly lowered.

At that exact moment, a rideshare pulled into the driveway.

My suitcase was already waiting beside the front door.

Megan stared at it.

“You’re serious?”

“Yes.”

“But Christmas is in four days.”

“I know. My cruise leaves tonight.”

Her mouth opened, closed, then opened again.

“You booked a cruise without telling me?”

“You invited fifteen people to my house without asking me.”

For once, Megan had no immediate response.

Then Ryan walked through the back door without knocking, the way he always did.

He noticed my suitcase.

“What’s going on?”

“Mom says she’s abandoning Christmas,” Megan said.

I gave a short laugh.

“Interesting word.”

Ryan frowned.

“Look, Linda, everyone already arranged travel. My mother ordered gifts to be shipped here. You can’t just disappear.”

“This is my home,” I said. “I can leave it anytime I want.”

He scoffed.

“After everything we do for you?”

I turned toward him.

“Name one thing.”

The room went quiet.

Megan looked away.

Ryan quickly shifted into the calm voice he used whenever he wanted to sound reasonable.

“We’re family. Family helps.”

“No,” I said. “Family asks. Users assume.”

I picked up my tablet and opened the group chat.

Megan’s face immediately went pale.

I read Ryan’s message aloud.

Your mom will do it. She always does.

Ryan snapped, “That was private.”

“So was my home.”

Then I read his mother’s response about how much money staying with me would save them.

Megan lowered her voice.

“Mom, I was stressed.”

I looked at her.

My anger had begun turning into something sadder.

“So you made me the solution instead of treating me like a person.”

Oliver ran into the room holding his coat.

“Grandma, are we going somewhere?”

I crouched beside him.

“I am, sweetheart. You’re spending Christmas with your mom and dad this year.”

His little face dropped.

That was when Megan began crying.

Not because she fully understood what had happened yet, but because the responsibility had finally landed on her.

My phone rang.

Ryan’s mother.

I answered on speaker.

“Linda,” she barked, “I heard you’re trying to ruin our Christmas.”

I glanced toward my suitcase.

“No,” I said. “I’m returning it to its rightful owners.”
